If you’re planning a birthday party, graduation, crawfish boil, football gathering, holiday get-together, wedding celebration, or another event at your home, chances are you’ll spend plenty of time getting everything ready.
The grass gets cut. The patio furniture gets cleaned up. Decorations go out. Food gets planned.
And then you look at the house.
Maybe that green algae on the siding is a little more noticeable than you thought.
That’s when many homeowners start thinking about scheduling a professional house wash.
But here’s something we’ve learned at Wash Hawk Softwash:
Don’t wait until a day or two before the party.
Your home may look dramatically better immediately after a professional exterior cleaning, but we generally recommend having the work completed about a week before your event whenever possible.
Here’s why.
The Sweet Spot: About One Week Before Your Event
If you’re cleaning your home specifically for an upcoming event, our recommendation is simple:
Schedule the actual cleaning approximately 5–7 days before your guests arrive.
That gives your property enough time to dry completely, allows any remaining organic growth to continue dying off, and lets that freshly cleaned appearance fully develop.
It also avoids something many homeowners don’t consider until after the cleaning is finished.
Reason #1: Your Property Needs Time to Dry
Professional exterior cleaning uses a lot of water.
There’s water used to apply cleaning solutions, water used during the cleaning process, and plenty of additional water used to rinse and dilute around landscaping and other areas of the property.
By the time we’re finished, the area around your house can sometimes look like it just experienced a Louisiana rainstorm.
That’s normal.
But depending on your property, drainage, shade, soil conditions, and weather, some areas can take longer than others to completely dry.
You probably know your own property better than anyone.
If certain areas of your yard tend to hold water after a heavy rain, keep that in mind when scheduling your cleaning.
The last thing you want is guests walking through damp areas or soft ground because the house was washed the day before the party.
Give the property some time.
Reason #2: There Can Be a Faint Cleaning-Solution Smell
Here’s another reason we don’t necessarily recommend washing your house the day before entertaining guests.
Professional soft washing uses cleaning solutions designed to eliminate algae and other organic growth rather than simply blasting it away with high pressure.
After cleaning, there can sometimes be a faint residual cleaning-solution smell around the exterior.
It doesn’t last forever.
But if you’re trying to create the impression of a beautifully maintained home, you probably don’t want your guests arriving and immediately thinking:
“Oh, they just had this place cleaned.”
You want them thinking:
“Wow. Their house always looks great.”
Giving yourself several days between the cleaning and your event allows those temporary smells to dissipate.
The result feels much more natural.
Reason #3: The Results Can Actually Get Better Over the Next Few Days
This one surprises some homeowners.
Your house can continue looking better AFTER we leave.
Soft washing works differently from simply using high pressure to remove visible dirt.
Our cleaning process attacks organic growth such as algae and other contaminants.
While you’ll see a major difference immediately, some remaining organic material can continue breaking down after the initial cleaning.
Over the following several days, areas can continue to brighten as the cleaning process does its job.
That’s one reason we’ll occasionally hear from a customer several days later who is even more excited about the results than they were when we finished.
They’ll say something like:
“The house looks even better now!”
That’s exactly what we want.
And if you’re having people over, that’s the version of your home you want them to see.
Don’t Schedule the Cleaning a Month Before the Party Either
There’s another side to this.
You don’t necessarily want to clean the property too early.
Louisiana gives exterior surfaces an almost perfect environment for organic growth:
Heat + humidity + moisture = algae loves it here.
If your primary reason for cleaning is an important event, there’s little reason to have the house washed six or eight weeks beforehand when you could schedule it closer to the occasion.
That’s why we like that approximately one-week window.
It’s close enough that your property should still look freshly cleaned but far enough away to allow everything to dry and settle.
But Here’s the Important Part: BOOK Much Earlier
There’s a big difference between when you should have the cleaning performed and when you should schedule it.
If you want your home cleaned one week before your event, please don’t call us one week before your event!
Whenever possible, start looking for a pressure washing or soft washing company about a month ahead of time.
During slower periods, you may have plenty of options.
During busy periods?
That’s a completely different story.
Pressure Washing Companies Can Book Weeks in Advance
Exterior cleaning is seasonal.
Once Louisiana weather warms up and homeowners start preparing pools, patios, driveways, houses, and outdoor entertaining areas, schedules can fill quickly.
During busy periods, it’s not unusual for established pressure washing companies to have jobs scheduled several weeks out.
If you call on Tuesday and say:
“I’m having 40 people over Saturday. Can you wash my house Friday?”
There may simply be no opening.
Now you’re calling company after company trying to find whoever happens to be available rather than choosing the company you actually wanted.

1–2 Weeks Before
Handle landscaping, repairs, or other outdoor projects that could make the house dirty again.
About 5–7 Days Before
Have your house, concrete, windows, patio, or other exterior surfaces professionally cleaned.
Several Days Before
Allow everything to completely dry and let the cleaning process continue working.
Event Day
Put out the chairs.
Fire up the grill.
Open the doors.
And enjoy your home.
That’s when you want the property looking its best.
What Should You Have Cleaned Before an Event?
You don’t necessarily need to clean everything.
Think about what your guests are actually going to see and use.
For many homeowners, that could mean:
- House washing
- Driveway and walkway cleaning
- Patio cleaning
- Pool deck cleaning
- Exterior window washing
- Fence cleaning
- Gutter whitening
- Front entrance cleaning
Sometimes a simple house wash is enough.
